The Danube Days are a dayfilling educational activities on water protection and microplastics With playful educational modules, we bring a water education day to five countries along the Danube. Together with local NGOs and schools, we implement 14 Danube Days with local young people. The day’s programme consists of workshops, an educational box, a knowledge workshop and a mobile exit game.
The project is being implemented by the association for wildlife protection e.V. (AWP), a non-profit organisation based in Freiburg im Breisgau, which has been involved in international projects for nature conservation for over ten years. Currently, AWP focuses on interactive educational offers on the topics of nature conservation, water protection and microplastics.
Here we impart knowledge about biodiversity, the Danube as a natural habitat and the threats posed by humans. The amount of plastic on earth is enormous.
Plastics that are not disposed of or recycled become microplastics in the environment and have severe consequences for humans and nature. Together we develop solutions to counteract the plastic flood.
The educational kit is a compilation of experiments on the formation, distribution and properties of microplastics. In the case we find magnets, filters, magnifying glasses and more for small water and microplastic experiments. Anyone who hosts a Danube Day with us will receive an educational kit to keep.
A mobile exit game was produced especially for this project. This is where environmental education meets a mobile Escape Room. A series of tasks and puzzles around the topic of microplastics leads through an exciting story. A series of tasks and puzzles around the topic of microplastics leads through an exciting story.
Participants can try things out for themselves at various experiment stations. Through the Knowledge Workshop modules, participants learn vividly how the current, wind, water, and riverbed break down plastic into microplastics, how it spreads in the environment, and why it is harmful to health.
Mankind has produced 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic so far. Only 9% of these are recycled. A large proportion of plastics end up in the environment after being used, often once, and are washed into rivers where they are ground up by currents, wind and weather. This creates microplastics, which have many properties that threaten the health of humans and nature.
The Danube Days cover four topics
As a connecting element of the individual Danube Days, a baton travels between the participants at the respective locations. Each participating group sends a small video message to the next group. The baton is a symbol of a piece of identity shared by all people along this river. And it reminds us that nature conservation knows no political boundaries and is a common cause.
Contact us and we will come to you with the Danube Days! The day programme is aimed at young people aged 10-20. The offer is free of charge. From September we will be travelling from the source of the Danube towards the Black Sea. If you are interested in a Danube Day, please get in touch.
